Introduction

Linphone and Liblinphone make use of third party open-source software components. These components are not covered by the commercial licensing agreement proposed by Belledonne Communications. However their open-source licenses are compatible with proprietary distribution, provided that some conditions are met.

This document lists and describes these open-source components and their respective licenses.

This documentation is informative and intends to help distributors of linphone-based software to make their distribution, documentation and end-user license agreement compliant with the requirements of these open-source components.

It also informs about other legal aspects of certain algorithms implemented by these third party, for example concerning encryption techniques and software patents.

Remarks:

  • Mediastreamer2, oRTP, belle-sip and bctoolbox components are the property of Belledonne Communications and thus fall into the scope the commercial licensing. They are the main dependencies of liblinphone.
     
  • PolarSSL is the SSL/TLS library used by Linphone for all encryption features. Licensing for it is included in the commercial licensing proposed by Belledonne Communications. MbedTLS library is the continuation of the PolarSSL project, and is replacing PolarSSL in newest versions of Linphone. MbedTLS is covered by an Apache license compatible with proprietary distribution.
     
  • Encryption algorithms are considered as weapons by certain countries, (typically USA and France). Legal paperwork from US and France government agencies are required to export or import software using encryption. Apple requires these declarations during the process of submission of an application to Appstore.
     
  • Translation files (*.ts) of the desktop versions are excluded of commercial licensing and thus must not be used or distributed by customers.

     

Building Linphone/Liblinphone for proprietary distribution

The Linphone architecture can optionally include third party software covered by GPL license, that must in any case never be included in a proprietary application.

In order to avoid any confusion, the build scripts have an option called “no gpl third party”, that automatically disables any GPL third party from the build process.

For all cmake based build procedures it is achieved by adding the build option ENABLE_GPL_THIRD_PARTIES=OFF, for instance:

Description

ZRTP is is peer to peer protocol to exchange cryptographic keys in purpose of establishing  secure RTP streams using SRTP.

bZRTP is Belledonne Communications implementation of ZRTP specification (RFC6189). bZRTP implement an additional mode, not described in the RFC6189, to support Post Quantum Cryptography.

Used by mediastreamer2.

WEBRTC AEC and VAD

Description

The Webrtc Acoustic Echo Canceller for mobile (AECm) is used as a fall back on Android platform in case a builtin echo canceller is not available.

The Webrtc AEC is used on Mac, Linux, and Windows as hardware echo cancellation is generally not available on these platforms.

The Voice Activity Detector (VAD) from webRTC is also wrapped into mediastreamer2.

All components taken from webRTC and brought to mediastreamer2 library are all included in the libmswebrtc .so/.dll/.dylib file, as a mediastreamer2 plugin.

FFMPEG can be licensed either under the GPL or LGPL depending on configuration at build-time, however in context of usage by liblinphone, only the LGPL flavor is compiled and used.

These libraries must not be used on iOS because of the requirements of their license cannot be fulfilled. Indeed there is no shared library support on iOS.

The main requirement of the LGPL license is the possibility for the end-user to replace the LGPL libraries by other versions of these libraries. This implies the use of dynamic libraries and that source code of the library is available.

libbsd

Removed since version 4.2

Minizip has a dependency on libbsd on Linux. This library provides useful functions commonly found on BSD systems, and lacking on others like GNU systems.

License

The licenses for the code contained in libbsd are quite permissive to make it easier for other projects to use it. Most of the licenses are either New BSD, MIT style or ISC, check the source code for the actual license details.
